A Look Back: History of Badgerys Creek
How Badgerys Creek Got Its Name
The suburb is named after James Badgery. He was a farmer and miller who came from Britain. In 1806, he received a large piece of land here, about 840 acres (3.4 km2). His farm was called Exeter Farm. A creek ran through his property, and people started calling it Badgery's Creek. Eventually, the whole area took on that name.
Growing and Changing
After James Badgery passed away, his land was divided into smaller pieces in the 1880s. This caused more people to move to the area. A post office opened in 1894, and a school was built in 1895. Badgerys Creek slowly grew into a rural suburb. By 1981, about 1,560 people lived there.
The Airport's Impact
In 1986, the Australian government announced that Badgerys Creek would be the site for a new airport. The government bought many properties for this project. Because of this, and worries about living near an airport, many people moved away. By 1996, fewer than 500 people lived in the suburb. The population kept shrinking, and by the 2021 Census, only 168 people remained. Even though construction hadn't started for a long time, a report in 2012 confirmed Badgerys Creek was still the best spot for the airport.
Nature and Weather
Local Geography
Several creeks flow through Badgerys Creek. Badgerys Creek itself flows north into a reservoir. South Creek forms the eastern border of the suburb. There are also hills like Mills Hill and Raymond Hill. The western boundary is marked by Oaky Creek and Cosgrove Creek.
Understanding the Climate
Badgerys Creek has a humid subtropical climate. This means it has hot summers and cool winters. Summers can be dry or humid. Because the area is open and grassy, nighttime temperatures in winter are a bit cooler than in other parts of western Sydney. Sometimes, there are frosts on winter mornings.
Most of the rain falls in late summer and early autumn, often with thunderstorms. The driest months are in late winter and early spring. These months usually have the most sunny days.
