Bringelly (/brɪŋɛli/) is a suburb located in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. You can find it on the Northern Road, between the towns of Penrith and Camden. Bringelly also has its own public school and is named after a nearby hill.

Discovering Bringelly's Past

Bringelly was first known as a district in Sydney in the early 1800s. Later, it became a "parish" within the County of Cumberland. This larger area also included places like Greendale, Wallacia, and Badgerys Creek.

Early Settlers and Land Grants

In 1812, Robert Lowe was given a large piece of land, about 1,000 acres (400 hectares), in the Bringelly area. He is thought to be the first British settler there. By 1818, most of the land had been given out and was being cleared for farms. D'Arcy Wentworth, a main surgeon in New South Wales, also received land in the area.

There's a story that the famous Australian bushranger, Bold Jack Donahue, used Bringelly as a hiding spot. Legend says he was even killed on Wentworth's property.

Historic Buildings in Bringelly

A special old property called Kelvin, also known as The Retreat, was built in 1820. It was built by Thomas Laycock Jnr. This farmhouse is built in the Georgian style, which was popular back then. Kelvin is surrounded by a lovely garden and is listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register. This means it's a very important historical site.

Bringelly's Growth and Local Government

The Luddenham Post Office first opened on January 1, 1857. It was later renamed Bringelly in December 1863. Bringelly Public School opened its doors in 1878, helping local children get an education.

In 1906, local government came to the area with the creation of the Shire of Nepean. This shire covered a large area, but it didn't do very well. In 1948, the New South Wales Government combined many local councils. The Shire of Nepean was split up, and Bringelly was divided between the Liverpool and Camden Councils. It's still split between these two councils today.

Future Developments and Bradfield

Bringelly is very close to Badgerys Creek, which is where the new Western Sydney Airport is being built. The NSW Government planned to build a new business area in northern Bringelly. This area is meant to become Sydney's third major business hub, after Sydney city and Parramatta.

In March 2021, Gladys Berejiklian, who was the Premier of New South Wales at the time, announced that this new centre would be named after Dr John Bradfield. He was the engineer who designed the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge. The name "Bradfield" was chosen because it represents building important projects. In March 2023, a part of Bringelly became part of this new suburb called Bradfield.
