A Look Back at Rossmore's History

Rossmore was once known by a different name: Cabramatta. This name came from the local area, which was called the parish of Cabramatta. A famous book called The Cabramatta Store was written about this area by Mary Theresa Vidal. Many people believe this was the first novel ever published by a woman in Australia!

In 1856, the railway line was extended, and a train station was built in what is now the modern-day Cabramatta. To avoid confusion with the new station, the old town of Cabramatta changed its name to Rossmore. The new name is thought to have come from a horse stud (a place where horses are bred) in the area called Rossmoor Stud. This stud was likely named after Rossmore Lodge, a very famous horse stud in Kildare, Ireland.

The Rossmore Post Office first opened its doors on March 22, 1897.
