History of Leppington
Early Beginnings and Naming
The land where Leppington is today was originally home to the Darug people. They were the first inhabitants of this area.
Later, in 1821, a large piece of land was given to a man named William Cordeaux. He called his property Leppington Park. Cordeaux built a big two-storey house there. He also used workers to help him farm the land. Sadly, the house burned down in the 1940s. Some of its bricks were later used to build Leppington Public School.
How Leppington Got Its Name
The suburb almost had a different name: Raby. The very first land grant in this area was given to Alexander Riley in 1810. He named his property Raby.
In 1914, this Raby property was divided into smaller pieces. A school was built in 1923 and was called Raby Public School. The Leppington Post Office opened a year later, on 12 February 1924.
In 1955, the school's name changed to Leppington Public School. This might have been because they used bricks from William Cordeaux's old Leppington mansion. Since then, the area has been known as Leppington. Interestingly, a road called Raby Road, which connected the old Raby property to Campbelltown, later gave its name to the modern suburb of Raby.
In 2004, Leppington was chosen as a key area for growth in Sydney's south-west. This meant it would see a lot of new homes and developments.
