Baked Alaska facts for kids
Baked Alaska is a super cool dessert! It has yummy ice cream sitting on top of soft sponge cake (or sometimes Christmas pudding). All of this is covered with a fluffy, sweet topping called meringue.
To make it, the whole dessert goes into a really hot oven for just a short time. This cooks the meringue until it's golden. The meringue is like a cozy blanket that keeps the heat away from the ice cream. So, the ice cream stays frozen and doesn't melt!
The name "Baked Alaska" was created at a famous place called Delmonico's Restaurant in 1867. They named it to celebrate the new American territory of Alaska. Even though the dessert itself might have been around before, the name was new!
Did you know there's a special day for this dessert? February 1 is Baked Alaska Day!
Different Kinds of Baked Alaska
There are a few fun ways to change up this dessert. One popular version is called Bombe Alaska.
Bombe Alaska
Bombe Alaska is a bit like the classic Baked Alaska, but with an exciting twist! Just before serving, a little bit of dark rum is poured over the dessert. Then, the whole thing is set on fire! This is called flambéing, and it makes the dessert look amazing as it comes to your table.
