Balâtre (which is Balåsse in the local Walloon language) is a charming village in Wallonia, a region in Belgium. It's also a district within the larger municipality of Jemeppe-sur-Sambre, located in the province of Namur.

Before 1977, Balâtre was its own separate municipality, meaning it had its own local government. But in 1977, many smaller Belgian municipalities joined together to form larger ones. This is known as the fusion of the Belgian municipalities. That's when Balâtre became part of Jemeppe-sur-Sambre. The village is located on the northern bank of the Ligny River.

History of Balâtre

Balâtre has a special place in history, especially because of a famous battle that happened nearby.

The Battle of Ligny

On June 16, 1815, Balâtre was an important spot during the Battle of Ligny. This battle was fought between the Prussian army and the French army led by Napoleon Bonaparte. The Prussian soldiers strongly defended the village of Balâtre during this important conflict. This battle happened just two days before the even more famous Battle of Waterloo.
