What is Bald Mountain Ski Area?
Bald Mountain Ski Area is a small ski resort in the north central part of Idaho. It is known for being a friendly place to ski. The top of the mountain is about 4,400 feet (1,341 meters) above sea level. The ski area has a vertical drop of 684 feet (208 meters). This means you ski down a slope that drops that much in height.
How Did Bald Mountain Ski Area Start?
The ski area first opened in January 1960. It started with a simple rope tow. This tow was powered by a gasoline engine. At first, it was mainly for the people who worked for the Potlatch Corporation. This company was involved in forest products. Their village was called Headquarters. Later in the 1960s, Bald Mountain Ski Area opened its slopes to everyone.
What Can You Do There?
Bald Mountain Ski Area has slopes that face north. This helps keep the snow in good condition. There are two types of lifts to take you up the mountain:
- A T-bar
- A rope tow
The main lodge, where you can warm up and get ready, is located in the middle of the mountain. The parking area is also there. The ski area is usually open only on weekends. On average, it gets about 100 inches (254 cm) of snow each year. The T-bar lift was first used in January 1969. The main A-frame lodge building was built in 1971.
Is This the Famous Bald Mountain?
It is important to know that this Bald Mountain Ski Area is not the same as the much larger Bald Mountain near Sun Valley. The Sun Valley mountain is a very big and famous ski resort in southern Idaho. This Bald Mountain is a smaller, more local ski spot.
