History of Pierce
Pierce is famous for being the place where gold was first found in Idaho. This happened in October 1860. A man named Elias D. Pierce and Wilbur F. Bassett discovered gold near Orofino Creek.
At that time, the land belonged to the Nez Perce people. They had an agreement, or treaty, about their land. The discovery of gold led to big changes in this agreement. It also played a part in the Nez Perce War in 1877.
Pierce was also the first county seat for Shoshone County. A county seat is the main town where the government offices are. The Pierce Courthouse, built in 1862, is the oldest public building in all of Idaho.
Later, the county seat moved to other towns. In 1911, Clearwater County was formed, and Pierce became part of it.
