Baldwin Park started as land for cattle. It was part of large properties called Rancho Azusa de Dalton and Rancho La Puente. In 1860, the area was known as Vineland. Later, in 1906, its name changed to Baldwin Park. It was named after Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin, a famous person from that time. Baldwin Park officially became a city on January 25, 1956. It was the 47th city to be incorporated in California.
School History
The first school in Baldwin Park was built in 1884. It was a simple building with two rows of seats. Mr. Frazier was the first teacher. In 1888, the Vineland School District was created. Baldwin Park is famous for being the home of the very first In-N-Out burger stand. It opened on October 22, 1948. This was the first drive-thru restaurant in California. The original building was replaced in 2004. Today, In-N-Out has a training center and company store in Baldwin Park. Their first meatpacking plant is also located there.
In 2005, there were some protests about art at the Baldwin Park train station. The art, called Danzas Indigenas, was made by artist Judy Baca.
