Bananas in Pyjamas is a fun Australian children's television series. It first aired on 20 July 1992 on ABC. This show became super popular and was shown in many countries. It was even translated into different languages! In the United States, the word "Pyjamas" was changed to "Pajamas" to match their spelling.
The idea for the show came from a song called Bananas in Pyjamas. Carey Blyton wrote this song in 1967. It was a regular hit on the TV show Play School. This catchy song then became the theme for the new series. Later, in May 2011, the show got a cool new look. It was remade using CGI animation.

What the Show is About
The main characters in Bananas in Pyjamas are two friendly bananas. Their names are B1 and B2. They wear blue and white striped pyjamas!
Other important characters are three teddy bears: Amy, Lulu, and Morgan. There's also a clever character called Rat in a Hat. All these friends live in a neighborhood called "Cuddles Avenue."
The bananas live near the beach and help keep it safe. The teddy bears live next to the park and take care of it. Rat in a Hat runs the local community store. Everyone in Cuddles Avenue loves to eat "munchy honeycakes" and "yellow jelly".
How the Show Was Made
Where the Idea Came From
The characters were inspired by a song from 1969. British composer Carey Blyton wrote it for children. He was the nephew of the famous author Enid Blyton. The song is about bananas in pyjamas chasing teddy bears. It has a funny ending where the bananas "catch them unawares."
This song was shown on the Australian Play School for many years. It came with an animation of bananas in blue-and-white striped pyjamas. This led to a banana plush toy being made for Play School. These toys then became the look for B1 and B2.
Filming the Show
Helena Harris, who created and produced the show, developed it at ABC Studios. Two of the teddy bear characters, Amy and Morgan, are named after her own children.
The show used human actors inside big, detailed costumes. This was similar to other popular shows like Tweenies and Teletubbies. At first, the actors inside the costumes also did the voices for the bananas. But later, other people took over the voices.
New episodes of the show aired from 1992 until 2002. There were about 300 episodes and four special shows. Bananas in Pyjamas first aired in the United States in 1995. Toys for the show, made by TOMY, came out in 1996.
