Banff and Buchan facts for kids
Banff and Buchan is a special part of Aberdeenshire Council in Scotland. It's like a local area managed by the council.
In 2001, about 35,742 people lived there. The main jobs in Banff and Buchan are in fishing and farming. There are also businesses that process fish and farm products, and provide services for these industries.
Long ago, between 1975 and 1996, Banff and Buchan was also the name of a much larger area called a "district" within the Grampian Region. This old district was bigger than the Banff and Buchan we know today. It even included areas now called Buchan and Formartine.

What is the Banff and Buchan Committee Area Like?
This area is pretty much on its own, and its population has gone down a little recently. But it's a great place for tourists! People love its beautiful coastline, charming villages by the sea, and fun places to visit.
The economy here relies a lot on fishing and farming. People are thinking about how new rules for fishing and farming might affect the area. There's a plan called the Buchan Local Action Plan to help with these issues. This area also gets special money from the European Union to help it grow.
You can find very old history here too. There's an ancient monument called Longman Hill, which is a large, old burial mound (a "long barrow") near Macduff. Another old site, Cairn Lee, is a bit west of Longman Hill.
Banff and Buchan as a Historical District
Banff and Buchan used to be a local government district in the Grampian region. It was created in 1975. This district brought together several towns and areas from two older counties: Banffshire and Aberdeenshire.
From Banffshire, it included towns like Banff, Aberchirder, Macduff, and Portsoy. It also included the areas around Aberchirder and Banff, plus Fordyce.
From Aberdeenshire, it included towns like Fraserburgh, Peterhead, Rosehearty, and Turriff. It also included the areas of Deer and Turriff, plus Cruden. The rest of Banffshire became part of the Moray district.
In 1996, the Banff and Buchan district changed again. It became part of a new, larger area called Aberdeenshire. The old district was then split into three smaller "committee areas": Banff and Buchan, Buchan (around Peterhead), and Formartine (around Ellon and Turriff).
How Banff and Buchan is Represented in Parliament
The name Banff and Buchan is also used for a special area that elects a person to the House of Commons in the Parliament of the United Kingdom in London. This person is called a Member of Parliament (MP).
Since 2017, David Duguid from the Conservative Party has been the MP for Banff and Buchan. He took over from Dr Eilidh Whiteford of the Scottish National Party.
From 1999 to 2011, Banff and Buchan was also a constituency for the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. Even though they had the same name, the boundaries for the UK Parliament and Scottish Parliament constituencies were different after 2005.
