Banksmeadow is a suburb in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is about 11 kilometres south of the main city area of Sydney. This area is looked after by the Bayside Council. Banksmeadow is located right on the northern edge of Botany Bay.

A Look at Banksmeadow's Past

The name Banksmeadow used to be "Banks Meadow." It was named after a famous scientist called Sir Joseph Banks. He travelled to Australia with Captain James Cook in 1770. They first landed at Botany Bay on April 29, 1770. This happened while they were exploring Australia on their ship, the Endeavour.

In the early 1970s, a lot of land was created in Botany Bay. This was done by adding soil and sand to the water. This new land helped create a beach, a golf course, and large shipping areas. These shipping areas are now used by companies like Patricks and Hutchison.

What is Banksmeadow Used For?

Banksmeadow is mostly an area for businesses and factories. There are not many homes here. You will see many commercial and industrial buildings. These businesses are closely connected to the nearby Port Botany.

The area includes places like oil terminals. There is also a railway line called the Sydenham-Botany Goods Railway. A large chemical factory run by Orica Limited is also in Banksmeadow. You can also find a Kelloggs factory here, where they make breakfast cereals.

Cool Places and Landmarks

The Foreshore Beach is also known as Botany Beach. It runs along the edge of Botany Bay. Over the years, some of the sandy public beach has been lost. This happened because the Sydney Ports Corporation expanded the port facilities.

Now, a wall made of rocks covers a big part of the beach. This makes it harder to use as a public beach. The water quality at the beach is not always good. There is also a lot of sand loss. Sydney Ports is working to build two structures called groynes. These will help protect the rest of the beach. The area also has Banksmeadow Park and the Botany Golf Club.

Schools in the Area

The Banksmeadow Public School is located where Wiggins Street and Trevelyan Street meet in Botany. This school has been around for a long time. It was first opened in 1881.
