History of Bannockburn
Bannockburn was started by William Aitken, a real estate developer from Scotland. He wanted to create a community with large "country estates." He bought 110 acres (about 0.45 square kilometers) of land in Lake County.
The village was named after a Scottish village called Bannockburn. Construction began in 1924, and the village officially became a town in 1929. William Aitken designed Bannockburn for wealthy people who enjoyed bridge games and country clubs. He made sure the lots for homes were very large. This idea of big lots has stayed the same. In fact, the smallest lot size has grown from 1 acre to 2 acres.
How Bannockburn Grew
Over time, Bannockburn grew to its current size of 1,318 acres (about 5.3 square kilometers). In the 1950s, the Tri-State Tollway (a major highway) was built through the village. This helped Bannockburn grow, but the highway noise has been a problem for residents.
In the late 1960s, the people of Bannockburn decided to build business parks. These parks were placed along the northern edge of the village. In 1984, the first shopping area was created along Illinois Route 22. Bannockburn's local government services grew slowly to keep taxes low. However, a police department was started in the 1970s. A village hall, where local government works, was built in 1992.
