Exploring Baroota
Baroota is a unique area with interesting features. It stretches from the coastline in the west to the western side of the Flinders Ranges in the east.
What's in a Name?
Baroota originally started as a private land division. Its boundaries were officially set on March 13, 1997. The name "Baroota" likely comes from an early pastoral lease. This name might have come from a local Aboriginal tribe. Another idea is that it is a changed version of the Aboriginal word "nilbaroota." This word means "reedy place for animals" or "animal food."
Baroota's Landscape
The Augusta Highway and the Adelaide-Port Augusta railway line both run through Baroota. They go in a north-south direction. Part of the Black Range section of the Mount Remarkable National Park also extends into Baroota from the northeast. The Baroota Reservoir is located on the Baroota Creek in the eastern part of the area. This reservoir helps store water.
How People Use the Land
The land in Baroota is used for two main purposes. One is agriculture, which means farming. The other is conservation. This involves protecting the natural areas. These conservation efforts focus on the coastline in the west and the land around the Baroota Reservoir in the east. This helps protect the water supply.
Who Lives in Baroota?
According to the 2016 Australian census, which took place in August 2016, Baroota had a population of 95 people. This number tells us how many people were living there at that time.
