Barreal is a small community, also called a barrio, located in the municipality of Peñuelas, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 272 people lived there. It's a quiet place within the beautiful island of Puerto Rico.

A Look at Barreal's History
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
Puerto Rico used to be a territory of Spain. After the Spanish–American War, which ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Since then, Puerto Rico has been an unincorporated territory of the U.S.. This means it belongs to the U.S. but is not a state.

Soon after, in 1899, the United States Department of War did a special count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census.
