Barstow is a small community in Ferry County, located in the state of Washington in the United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's an area identified by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical purposes. In 2010, about 59 people lived in Barstow.
Geography of Barstow
Barstow is found in the northeastern part of Ferry County. It sits right next to U.S. Route 395, which is a major highway. The community is also on the west side of the Kettle River.
If you travel south on US 395 from Barstow, you'll reach Kettle Falls in about 14 miles (23 km). If you head north for about 17 miles (27 km), you'll arrive at the Canadian border near Laurier.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the Barstow area covers about 1.45 square kilometers (0.56 square miles) of land. There is no water area within the community's boundaries.
Cougar Incident
In 1999, a young boy, aged four, was involved in an incident with a cougar near Barstow. The boy was hurt but thankfully survived. The cougar was later found and removed from the area. This event happened about a mile south of Barstow. At that time, it was the ninth recorded cougar incident in Washington state history.
