How Laurier Got Its Name
The community of Laurier was first known as Russel. No one is quite sure why it was named Russel. When people wanted to open a post office, they found out that the name Russel might cause problems. So, they needed a new name.
In 1902, the Great Northern Railway arrived in the area. They suggested the name Boawell, which was a mix of two local settlers' names: Boath and Kidwell. However, Kidwell liked the name Laurier better. He suggested it after Sir Wilfrid Laurier, who was the Prime Minister of Canada from 1896 to 1911. The name Laurier was chosen, and the post office opened that same year.

The General Services Administration keeps track of government buildings. They list three buildings in Laurier. These include a station for border checks and two homes for border station workers. These buildings were all built in 1936.
U.S. Route 395 is a main road that goes through Laurier. It continues north right to the Canada-U.S. border. Once it crosses into Canada, it becomes British Columbia Highway 395.
