Bartolomé de la Cueva y Toledo (born August 24, 1499 – died June 29, 1562) was an important Spanish Catholic cardinal and bishop. He played a role in the Church during a time of big changes in Europe.

Life of Bartolomé de la Cueva

Bartolomé de la Cueva y Toledo was born in Cuéllar, Spain, on August 24, 1499. His parents were Francisco Fernández de la Cueva, who was the 2nd Duke of Alburquerque, and Francisca de Toledo.

After he became a priest, he worked for the Church in Spain. He served in the Diocese of Segovia and was a leader in the Toledo Cathedral. He also worked for the Pope in Spain. In 1525, he traveled to Italy with his brother Luis and Emperor Charles V.

Becoming a Cardinal

Pope Paul III made Bartolomé de la Cueva a cardinal on December 19, 1544. This was a very important position in the Catholic Church. He received his cardinal's red hat and his first special church in Rome on May 5, 1546. As a cardinal, he often lived in Rome, which was the center of the Catholic Church.

Emperor Charles V was not happy that another Spanish bishop, Pedro Pacheco, was not made a cardinal at the same time. Because of this, the Emperor told Bartolomé and two other Spanish cardinals not to wear their cardinal robes until Bishop Pacheco also became a cardinal the next year.

Church Roles and Important Meetings

On September 12, 1548, Bartolomé became the administrator of the diocese of Avellino e Frigento in Italy. He held this role until March 10, 1549.

On June 8, 1549, he was officially made a bishop in Rome. Cardinal Juan Álvarez de Toledo led this important ceremony.

Bartolomé de la Cueva took part in several important meetings where new popes were chosen. These meetings are called papal conclaves.

  • He participated in the conclave of 1549-1550, which elected Pope Julius III.
  • He was part of the conclave in April 1555, which elected Pope Marcellus II.
  • He also participated in the conclave in May 1555, which elected Pope Paul IV.
  • Later, he was involved in the conclave of 1559, which elected Pope Pius IV.

From January 1554 to January 1555, he served as the Camerlengo of the Sacred College of Cardinals. This meant he was in charge of the cardinals' finances.

Later Life and Death

From October 1558 to June 1559, Cardinal de la Cueva served as the viceroy of the Kingdom of Naples. A viceroy was like a governor, ruling a region on behalf of the king.

In 1560, the new Pope Pius IV asked him to join a group of cardinals. Their job was to study how to make reforms and improvements in the Church. On September 13, 1560, he was promoted to lead the important archdiocese of Manfredonia.

Bartolomé de la Cueva y Toledo died in Rome on June 29, 1562. He was first buried in a church in Rome. Later, his remains were moved to his family's tomb in the San Francisco monastery in Cuéllar, Spain.
