After he became a priest, he worked for the Church in Spain. He served in the Diocese of Segovia and was a leader in the Toledo Cathedral. He also worked for the Pope in Spain. In 1525, he traveled to Italy with his brother Luis and Emperor Charles V.
Becoming a Cardinal
Pope Paul III made Bartolomé de la Cueva a cardinal on December 19, 1544. This was a very important position in the Catholic Church. He received his cardinal's red hat and his first special church in Rome on May 5, 1546. As a cardinal, he often lived in Rome, which was the center of the Catholic Church.
Emperor Charles V was not happy that another Spanish bishop, Pedro Pacheco, was not made a cardinal at the same time. Because of this, the Emperor told Bartolomé and two other Spanish cardinals not to wear their cardinal robes until Bishop Pacheco also became a cardinal the next year.
Church Roles and Important Meetings
On September 12, 1548, Bartolomé became the administrator of the diocese of Avellino e Frigento in Italy. He held this role until March 10, 1549.

Later Life and Death
From October 1558 to June 1559, Cardinal de la Cueva served as the viceroy of the Kingdom of Naples. A viceroy was like a governor, ruling a region on behalf of the king.
