History of Bartonville
Bartonville started as part of a settlement called Chinn's Chapel. This area was first settled in 1853 by Elisha Chinn. Over time, Chinn's Chapel split into three smaller communities. Today, Bartonville is the only one of these original towns that remains.
How Bartonville Got Its Name
The town of Bartonville was officially settled in 1878. It was named after a person named T. Bent Barton. In 1886, a local post office opened in the town. By 1890, Bartonville had about 25 residents. The Barton family owned many of the town's businesses. These included a general store, a gristmill (which grinds grain), and a cotton gin (which separates cotton fibers).
Growth and Changes Over Time
By 1896, Bartonville's population grew to about 100 people. The town then had three general stores. However, the post office closed in 1906. Even with this, the town continued to grow slowly. By 1930, Bartonville had 300 residents and a business.
Becoming an Official Town
In 1960, nearby cities like Irving started to grow. They were looking to expand their borders. People in Bartonville worried their town might be taken over. To prevent this, Bartonville officially became an incorporated town for the first time. At that point, it included areas that are now Double Oak and Copper Canyon.
A few years later, the fear of being taken over went away. So, the citizens of Bartonville voted to stop being an incorporated town.
Bartonville Today
The current town of Bartonville was incorporated again in 1973. Since then, it has continued to grow. This growth is part of the larger development happening north of the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. Bartonville is also next to a large planned neighborhood called Lantana.
