Bath is a small village in Steuben County, New York, United States. It is also the county seat, which means it's where the main government offices for the county are located. In 2010, about 5,786 people lived here. The village is part of a larger area also called Bath. It is located northwest of Elmira.

The village might have been named after the city of Bath, Somerset in England. Another idea is that it was named for Lady Laura Pulteney, 1st Countess of Bath. She was the daughter of Sir William Pulteney, who was one of the first landowners in the area.

Bath is home to the Bath VA Medical Center, which used to be a home for old soldiers. It also has the Bath National Cemetery. The village hosts the Steuben County Fair, which is the oldest fair that has run continuously in the United States.

History of Bath Village

The village of Bath was started in 1793. It officially became a village in 1816, but it wasn't fully organized until 1836.

Many historic buildings in Bath are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes places like the Davenport Library and the United States Post Office. These buildings are important because they show the history and architecture of the area.

A book called "Genesee Fever" by Carl Carmer tells a story set in Bath. It talks about the first European settlers in this region. Bath was once the place where people could buy land for a very large area, about 1.2 million acres.

The village is close to Interstate 86, a major highway. Other important roads like New York State Route 54 and New York State Route 415 also meet in Bath. County Roads 10 and 13 lead into the village too.

Bath has a railroad called the Bath & Hammondsport Railroad. It connects to other train lines and helps move goods. Trains usually run through Bath five days a week.

The Conhocton River flows through Bath. There is also a small artificial lake called Lake Salubria southeast of the village.
