Scientific classification

Batrachyla nibaldoi is a special type of frog that lives only in Chile, a country in South America. It belongs to a family of frogs called Batrachylidae. You can find these frogs in the Los Lagos and Aysén Regions of Chile. They live in an area stretching from Villa O'Higgins in the south to some islands like Kent and Melchor Islands in the north. This frog is also known as Nibaldo's wood frog. It was named after Nibaldo Bahamonde, a Chilean marine biologist, to honor his important work in zoology in Chile.

What Does Nibaldo's Wood Frog Look Like?

Female Nibaldo's wood frogs are about 3.5 to 4.1 centimeters (1.4 to 1.6 inches) long. We don't have information about the size of the males.

Their snout, which is like their nose area, is rounded when you look from above. It slopes downwards when you look from the side. They have a visible eardrum, called a tympanum. There is also a fold of skin above the eardrum.

The frog's fingers and toes are thin. They have slightly pointed tips. Their fingers do not have any webbing. However, their toes have thin webbing at the base.

The frog's back can be light brown, yellowish-brown, or grayish. It has dark brown spots that form lines along its body. There is a dark stripe that goes from its eye to its eardrum. The frog's belly is white.

Where Does Nibaldo's Wood Frog Live?

Habitat and Lifestyle

Nibaldo's wood frogs live in steppe habitats. These are like grasslands or shrublands. They are found in valleys that are surrounded by forests. These forests have trees like Nothofagus antarctica, Nothofagus betuloides, and Drymis winteri.

You can often find these frogs hiding under logs, rocks, or in bushes. Male frogs call out from lagoons and temporary pools. These pools usually have a lot of plants growing in them.

Female frogs lay their eggs under rocks and moss. When it rains and the area floods, the baby frogs, called larvae, develop in the water.

Conservation and Threats

This frog species is quite common in its local areas. You can find many of them, even along the Carretera Austral road. Their home range also includes protected places. One such place is Laguna San Rafael National Park.

However, there is a possible threat to these frogs. An animal called the American mink has been brought into the area. These minks could be a danger to the frogs.
