The Battle of Guadalupe Island was a sea fight that happened near Guadalupe Island in the Caribbean Sea. It took place on November 8, 1595. This battle was part of a bigger conflict called the Anglo-Spanish War (1585–1604).

In this battle, five Spanish ships, called frigates, fought against nine English ships. The Spanish ships were led by Don Pedro Tello de Guzmán and Don Gonzalo Méndez de Canço. The English ships were part of a larger fleet led by famous English sailor Sir Francis Drake.

What Happened at Guadalupe Island?

The English fleet was on an important trip to attack Spanish lands. But near Guadalupe Island, a smaller group of Drake's ships met the Spanish frigates. The Spanish ships were faster and better at fighting in the Caribbean waters.

The battle ended with a clear Spanish victory. One of the English ships, named the Francis, was captured by the Spanish. The other English ships had to escape.

After the Battle

Because of this battle, the Spanish learned about Drake's plans. They quickly sent 500 soldiers and supplies to San Juan in Puerto Rico. They also set up cannons in important places. The five Spanish frigates that won the battle at Guadalupe Island also helped guard the entrance to San Juan's bay.

When Drake's main fleet arrived at San Juan on November 22, the Spanish were ready. Drake tried to attack the town, but the strong Spanish defenses stopped him. This led to another Spanish victory against Drake's forces.
