The Battle of Uhud (Arabic: غزوة أحد) happened on March 23, 625. It took place near Mount Uhud in what is now north-western Saudi Arabia. This battle was a big fight between the Muslim community from Medina, led by Muhammad, and an army from Mecca, led by Abu Sufyan. Many Muslims had moved from Mecca to Medina earlier.
This battle was the second major fight between the Meccans and the Muslims. The first was the Battle of Badr in 624. In that battle, a smaller Muslim army had won against a much larger Meccan army. For the Muslims, the Battle of Uhud was a tough loss.
Why the Battle Happened
Muhammad started teaching the religion of Islam in Mecca between 613 and 622. He gained a small group of followers. However, he also faced strong opposition from the Quraysh. The Quraysh was the main group that ruled Mecca, and Muhammad himself belonged to it.
The Muslims left Mecca in 622 because they were being treated badly. They moved to Medina, which was once called Yathrib. After moving, the Muslims saw themselves as being at war with Mecca. They sometimes stopped Meccan trade caravans. These caravans often carried goods that Muslims had left behind in Mecca. The Meccans then sent an army to stop these actions and punish the Muslims.
At the Battle of Badr in 624, a small Muslim force won against a much bigger Meccan army. Many Muslims felt this victory proved that God (Arabic: Allah) was on their side. They believed they would keep winning battles in the future.
The Battle Itself
The Quraysh soldiers met the Muslims at Uhud. The battle started with the Muslims doing well. However, a group of Muslim archers left their positions on a hill. They thought the battle was over and wanted to collect war spoils.
This mistake allowed the Meccan cavalry, led by Khalid ibn al-Walid, to attack the Muslims from behind. The Muslims were caught by surprise and were attacked from two sides. This sudden attack caused a lot of confusion and losses for the Muslim army.
The Muslims lost the battle that day. It was a difficult moment for them, especially after their victory at Badr.
