Baudin Beach is a small coastal town in South Australia. It is located on the north side of Kangaroo Island. This area is part of the Dudley Peninsula.

The town is about 115 kilometers (71 miles) south of Adelaide. It is also about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) west of Penneshaw. Baudin Beach was officially named in 2002. It honors Nicolas Baudin, a French explorer. He explored Kangaroo Island in 1802.

What's in a Name? Baudin Beach History

Before 2002, this area was called American Beach. This name came from a land development in 1966. The name was changed to Baudin Beach to avoid confusion. There was already another place called American Beach nearby.

The land was once a farm called Deep Creek Farm. Bruce Bates owned it before 1966. He sold it to Clem Bessell. Clem Bessell and a real estate agent, Cliff Hawkins, divided the land into smaller plots. Some people still call the area "Bessell's." The name Baudin Beach became official in March 2002.

Life at Baudin Beach

Baudin Beach has 207 land plots. Most of these plots are larger than 800 square meters. About 30% of these plots have homes on them. These are used as permanent homes or holiday houses. The rest of the plots are still undeveloped.

There are no shops in Baudin Beach. Also, there is no public water supply system. Near where a boat ramp is planned, you can see a special sculpture. It is made of copper and was put up in 2002. This sculpture honors Mary Beckwith. She is believed to be the first European woman to step foot in South Australia.

Fishing and Local Government

The waters right next to Baudin Beach are called Eastern Cove. This area is famous for its King George whiting fish. Many people enjoy fishing for them here.

Baudin Beach is part of different government areas. For national elections, it is in the federal division of Mayo. For state elections, it is in the electoral district of Mawson. Locally, it is managed by the Kangaroo Island Council.
