The Bay of Txingudi is a beautiful bay located where the Bidasoa river meets the sea. It sits on the border between two countries: France and Spain. On the French side, you'll find the town of Hendaye in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques area. Across the bay, on the Spanish side, are the town of Hondarribia and the San Sebastián Airport in the Basque Country.
This bay is very important for nature. It's a special place where many different kinds of birds come to rest and feed. Because of its natural value, parts of the bay are protected areas.
Where is the Bay of Txingudi?
The Bay of Txingudi is found in the south-west part of France and the north-east part of Spain. It's part of the estuary of the Bidasoa River. An estuary is where a river meets the ocean, mixing fresh water with salty sea water. The border between France and Spain actually runs right through this river estuary.
- On the French side, the bay is next to Hendaye.
- On the Spanish side, it faces Hondarribia and the San Sebastián Airport.
Sometimes, the name "Bay of Txingudi" can refer to the entire body of water that separates the French and Spanish coasts in this area.
A Home for Wildlife
The Bay of Txingudi is a very important place for bird-watching. Many birds, especially migratory birds, use this area as a stopover point during their long journeys. They find food and a safe place to rest in the bay's marshes and waters.
To protect this important natural habitat, the coastal marshes on the Spanish side of the bay have been named a Ramsar site since 2002. A Ramsar site is a wetland of international importance, recognized for its unique ecological features. This means the area is carefully managed to make sure it remains a safe and healthy home for birds and other wildlife.
