A Look Back in Time
Puerto Rico used to be controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is part of the U.S. but does not have the same rights as a state.
Early Population Counts
Soon after, in 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This type of count is called a census. The census found that 765 people lived in Bayamoncito barrio at that time. Over the years, the population has changed, as shown in the table below.

Special Communities Program
In Puerto Rico, there's a special program to help communities that need extra support. These are called Special Communities.
What are Special Communities?
In 2001, a law was passed to find and identify these communities across Puerto Rico. These are places where people might face challenges like limited resources or services. The goal is to help improve their living conditions.
Bayamoncito's Role
In 2017, Governor Ricardo Rosselló created a new government agency. This agency works directly with the Special Communities of Puerto Rico Program. A part of Bayamoncito, known as Las Parcelas, is one of the 742 places on the list of Comunidades Especiales de Puerto Rico. This means Las Parcelas receives special attention and support to help its residents.
