Beachwood is a city in eastern Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. It's a suburb of Cleveland and part of the larger Cleveland area. In 2020, about 14,040 people lived here.

History of Beachwood
The area that is now Beachwood has a long history. It was once part of Warrensville Township. In 1915, Beachwood became its own independent village. This happened after the township decided to close a local school.
People in Beachwood wanted their own school. So, they created a petition to separate. On June 26, 1915, Beachwood officially became a village. Later, in 1960, it gained full city status.
The city was named for the many Beech trees growing there. The spelling of "Beachwood" is a bit of a mystery. Some say an early clerk misspelled "Beechwood" on official papers. This mistake might have led to the current spelling.
Geography and Location
Beachwood is located in Ohio at coordinates 41.482226 degrees north and -81.504001 degrees west.
The United States Census Bureau says the city covers about 5.34 square miles (13.83 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with only a small part being water.
People and Community
Population and Diversity
In 2010, Beachwood had 11,953 people living in 5,064 homes. The city's population density was about 2,242 people per square mile.
Most residents (77.3%) were White. About 13.7% were African American, and 7.4% were Asian. People of Hispanic or Latino background made up 1.9% of the population.
The average age in Beachwood in 2010 was 52.5 years old. About 19.6% of residents were under 18. Many residents, 32.3%, were 65 years or older.
Beachwood's Jewish Community
Since the 1950s, Beachwood has become a popular place for the Jewish community in the Greater Cleveland area. After World War II, many Jewish families moved from inner-city neighborhoods to the eastern suburbs.
In 2017, about 90% of Beachwood's population identified as Jewish. This made it one of the cities with the largest Jewish populations per person outside of Israel.
Beachwood has many Jewish institutions. These include synagogues, Jewish schools, and the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage. There are also Jewish-owned restaurants and businesses. The growth of Beachwood into a city is partly due to Jewish families moving there.
The city's public schools even offer Hebrew as a foreign language. This is unique for a public school in the United States.
Economy and Businesses
Beachwood is home to important healthcare centers. These include University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center and several Cleveland Clinic offices.
Many companies have their main offices in Beachwood. Some of these include Eaton Corporation, SITE Centers, and OMNOVA Solutions. The Cleveland Jewish News also has its headquarters here.
For shopping, Beachwood has Beachwood Place and LaPlace Center. These are upscale shopping areas. The city also has Canterbury Golf Club, a famous golf course that has hosted major events.

Beachwood offers fun places for families. Preston's H.O.P.E. is the largest fully accessible playground in Northeast Ohio. It's designed so everyone can play.
The Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage is also in Beachwood. This museum helps people learn about Jewish immigrant history and culture in the U.S.
The David Berger National Memorial is the smallest National Memorial in the country. It honors David Mark Berger, an Olympian from Cleveland. He was one of 11 Israeli Olympic team members killed in the 1972 Munich massacre.
