Beautiful Mountain (called Navajo: Dziłkʼi Hózhóonii in Navajo) is a special peak in the Chuska Mountains. Its top is the highest point in San Juan County, New Mexico. This mountain is about 26 miles (42 km) southwest of a town called Shiprock. It is located in the Four Corners area, where four states meet.
Beautiful Mountain is part of the Navajo Nation lands. It is very important in the traditional stories and beliefs of the Navajo people.
The Navajo people have many interesting traditional stories, also known as legends. One of these legends tells us about a giant, mythical male figure. This figure is made up of several mountains.
In this story, Beautiful Mountain forms the feet of this huge figure. The rest of the Chuska Mountains make up his body. Chuska Peak is said to be his head. The Carrizo Mountains form his legs.
The famous rock formation called Shiprock also plays a part in this legend. It is believed to be either a special medicine pouch or a bow carried by the giant figure. These stories show how deeply connected the Navajo people are to the land around them.
