Beinn Bheigeir is a cool hill on the island of Islay in Scotland. Sometimes people call it "Ben Vicar." It stands 491 meters (about 1,611 feet) tall. This makes it the highest point on Islay! It's also one of the seven special hills on Islay known as 'Marilyns'. A Marilyn is a hill in the UK or Ireland that is at least 150 meters (about 492 feet) higher than the land around it.

Getting to the Top

Beinn Bheigeir is located in the southeast part of Islay. It's found within the Ardtalla Estate. If you want to climb this hill, one way to start is from Ardtalla.

Your Adventure Begins

First, you'll follow a path heading north. This path goes towards a place called Proaig. After a while, you'll turn west. This turn will lead you towards Beinn Bheigeir itself.

The Climb

As you walk, you'll start to gain some height. Then, you'll turn northwest. This path takes you around the hill. You'll be heading towards a mountain pass called Bealach Corrach. A bealach is a Scottish word for a mountain pass, which is like a low point between two hills.

Once you reach the pass, the climb gets steeper. You'll walk west and then climb straight up to reach the very top. It's a challenging but rewarding climb!

What You'll See

At the very top of Beinn Bheigeir, you'll find a trig point. This is a special pillar or marker. It was used by mapmakers to help them create accurate maps of the area.

Amazing Views

On a clear day, the views from the summit are incredible! You can see the nearby island of Jura. You'll easily spot the famous Paps of Jura, which are three cone-shaped mountains. You might also see Kintyre, a long peninsula in Scotland. The Isle of Arran can be seen in the distance too. And of course, you'll have a fantastic view of most of Islay island spread out below you.
