Belington is a town in Barbour County, West Virginia, United States. It is located along the Tygart Valley River. In 2020, about 1,804 people lived there.

History of Belington

Belington was first settled between 1766 and 1770. It was known as the Barker Settlement. This name came from Elias and William Barker, who settled there.

How Belington Got Its Name

Around 1785, the area was called Yeagers. This name came from George Yeager and his sons, who were also early settlers. In 1855, the town got its current name, Belington. It was named after John Bealin, who opened a store in the area. He later moved to Kansas.

Belington During the Civil War

After the Battle of Philippi on June 3, 1861, Confederate soldiers retreated south. They set up camp near Laurel Mountain Road. This road today connects Belington with Elkins.

Growth and Development

A bridge was built over the Tygart Valley River in Belington in 1886. This made travel easier. In 1891, the West Virginia Central and Pittsburg Railway came to Belington. This railway later became the Western Maryland Railway.

In 1894, the land on the east side of the river became the town of Belington. The west side became Alston in 1897. The two towns joined together in 1906 to form the Belington we know today.

The Bernard E. Wilmoth House in Belington is a historic building. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The town covers a total area of about 2.13 square miles (5.52 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 2.06 square miles (5.34 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.07 square miles (0.18 square kilometers), is water.
