Ben Eager's Hockey Journey
Starting in the NHL
Ben Eager was chosen early in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. The Phoenix Coyotes picked him 23rd overall. Later, he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers. This trade included other players like goaltender Sean Burke.
Time with the Philadelphia Flyers
During the 2006–07 season, Ben Eager played for the Flyers. He had a lot of penalty minutes that season. Penalty minutes are given to players for breaking rules during a game. Even though he played only 63 games, he led the entire league in these minutes. That same year, his teammates voted him as the player who had improved the most. He received the Pelle Lindbergh Memorial Trophy.
Winning the Stanley Cup with Chicago
On December 18, 2007, Eager was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks. He quickly became an important part of their team. He scored his first goal in the Stanley Cup playoffs on May 2, 2009. This goal helped the Blackhawks win a key game against the Vancouver Canucks.
A year later, on May 31, 2010, Eager scored another important playoff goal. This was in Game 2 of the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals against his old team, the Philadelphia Flyers. His goal was the winning goal in that game. On June 9, 2010, Ben Eager and the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup. They beat the Flyers in an exciting Game 6.
Moving to Other Teams
After winning the Stanley Cup, Eager was traded to the Atlanta Thrashers on June 23, 2010. Other players like Dustin Byfuglien were also part of this trade. During the 2010–11 season, he was involved in an on-ice incident that led to a penalty and a four-game suspension from the league. Midway through that season, he was traded again, this time to the San Jose Sharks.
On July 1, 2011, Ben Eager signed a new contract with the Edmonton Oilers. He played for them for a few seasons. Later, in 2014, he played briefly for CSKA Moscow in Russia. He then returned to North America to play for the Chicago Wolves in the American Hockey League (AHL).
After His Playing Career
In November 2016, Ben Eager was chosen to play for the Chicago Blackhawks alumni team. This team plays in the annual NHL Winter Classic, which is a special outdoor hockey game.
