Berbeo is a small town and a municipality in Colombia. It is located in the Lengupá Province, which is part of the Boyacá Department. The town sits high up in the Eastern Ranges of the Colombian Andes mountains. Its elevation is about 1,350 meters (4,429 feet) above sea level.
Berbeo shares its borders with several other towns. To the east, it borders San Eduardo. To the west, it borders Zetaquirá and Miraflores. Zetaquirá is also to its north, and Miraflores and Páez are to its south.
What's in a Name?
The town of Berbeo has had a few different names over time. It was once known as San Fernando de Aguablanca. It was also called Lengupá. Since 1913, the town has been named Berbeo. This name honors a person named Juan Francisco Berbeo.
A Glimpse into History
Long before the Spanish arrived, the area where Berbeo is now was home to the Muisca. They were an indigenous group living in Colombia. People have found ancient rock carvings, called petroglyphs, in Berbeo. These carvings show the art and history of the Muisca people.
Modern Berbeo was officially started on April 23, 1743. It was founded by a group of religious people called Jesuits.
