Berber cuisine facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Amazigh (also known as Berber) cuisine is the traditional food of the Amazigh people. They live across North Africa, in countries like Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. Their food has a long history and many different flavors.

Amazigh food changes from one area to another in North Africa. This means each dish has its own special identity. Some of these dishes are even more than a thousand years old! For example, the Zayanes people from the Khénifra region keep their food simple. They often use corn, barley, milk from ewes, goat cheese, butter, honey, and different kinds of meat.

Some popular Amazigh dishes you might find in North Africa include tajine, couscous, shakshouka, and pastilla. Other tasty foods are msemen, merguez, asida, harira, and sfenj.
