Bernd Hölzenbein (born March 9, 1946 – died April 15, 2024) was a famous German football player. He was known for playing as a forward, scoring goals, or as a winger, playing on the sides of the field. Bernd was a key player for the West German team that won the World Cup in 1974. Many remember him for a special moment in the 1974 World Cup final, where a foul on him led to a penalty kick that helped Germany tie the game.

Bernd Hölzenbein started his professional football career in 1967. He joined Eintracht Frankfurt, a big club in Germany. He played for them for many years, until 1981.

Playing for Eintracht Frankfurt

During his time with Eintracht Frankfurt, Bernd helped his team win several important trophies. They won the German Cup three times: in 1974, 1975, and 1981. He also helped them win the UEFA Cup in 1980. The UEFA Cup is a major European competition.

Bernd was a great goal scorer for Frankfurt. He scored 160 goals in 420 matches in the Bundesliga. The Bundesliga is Germany's top football league. His 160 goals are still a record for the club!

Playing in the United States

After playing for Eintracht Frankfurt, Bernd moved to the United States in 1981. He joined a team called Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Later, he also played for other teams in the Major Indoor Soccer League. These teams were the Memphis Americans and the Baltimore Blast.

Playing for West Germany

Bernd Hölzenbein also played for his country, West Germany. He played 40 games for the national team between 1973 and 1978. He scored five goals for West Germany.

One of his most famous moments was in the UEFA Euro 1976 Final. He scored a goal against Czechoslovakia that tied the game 2-2. West Germany later lost that game in a penalty shootout. At 30 years old, he became the oldest player to score in a Euro final.
