Bert and Ernie Sing Along is a fun Sesame Street album that came out in 1975. It features the whole gang of human characters and Muppets from Sesame Street. The album tells a story about a big sing-along that happens in Bert and Ernie's bathroom!
All the songs and conversations on this album were recorded just for it. A year later, some parts of the album were used to create a TV story for the Sesame Street show (episode #900). Joseph A. Bailey wrote the album's story. He first thought of it as a radio show. Bailey also worked on the TV version of the story.
The album cover shows a happy Bert and Ernie at a piano. But in the album, Bert is usually not very happy about the noisy sing-along! This album was released on CD for the first time as part of a 3-disc set called Old School: Volume 1. It also included other Sesame Street albums like The Sesame Street Book & Record and Big Bird Sings!.
What Happens on the Album?
The album starts with Bert taking a bath. You can hear him singing "Yankee Doodle." Soon, Ernie comes in and pushes their piano into the bathroom. He decides to join Bert, which makes Bert very unhappy! Ernie starts playing music. Bert sings a protest song called "I Refuse To Sing Along." Ernie tries to convince him to join in the fun.
After the song, Bert wants Ernie and the piano out. But then David joins them. Soon, Gordon and Bob arrive too. Then Luis, Maria, and Susan come in. They all start singing "I've Been Working on the Railroad." After that, Bob, Luis, Maria, and David sing "Old MacDonald Had a Farm."
At this point, Bert keeps asking for a towel. He wants his bath to be over! But everyone ignores him or says they can't reach a towel. More Muppets join the sing-along. These include The Count, Grover, Cookie Monster, Herry Monster, and Prairie Dawn. Sometimes, The Count tries to sing "Bats in My Belfry." But he gets thrown into the shower!
Side two of the album begins with Luis starting a song called "What's the Name of That Song." Everyone, even Bert, tries to guess the song. But they don't figure it out! Then David leads a song called "A Very Simple Dance." He gets everyone clapping their hands and stomping their feet. They turn around, touch their toes, and pull their ears. They flap their arms, stretch high, and then all fall down!
After many funny moments, Bert finally sings along with everyone. They all sing "Sing." The album ends with the song "Stars and Stripes Forever" playing softly. Ernie suddenly remembers he also invited the University of Michigan marching band! The door opens, and you can hear the band much clearer. Everyone is super excited! The album then slowly fades out.
