Beverly Bond's Early Life
Beverly Bond was born in New York City on December 19, 1970. Her mother, Mary Burroughs, raised her. As a child, Beverly lived in different homes across Maryland. She went to a new school almost every year from kindergarten to tenth grade! Sometimes, she even went to two different schools in one year.
Her mom loved music and taught Beverly about many different kinds. These included hip-hop, world beat, blues, jazz, soul, and funk. Beverly started collecting her own hip-hop records. She became a very serious record collector.
Beverly Bond's Career Journey
Becoming a Model
When Beverly was seventeen, she moved to New York. She wanted to become a model. Her first agency was Elite New Faces. Because she was 5 feet 9 inches tall, she often got jobs for sports brands. Later, Beverly signed with Wilhelmina Models. She worked on campaigns and commercials for popular brands like Diesel Jeans, Guess, Nike, and Nordstroms.
Becoming a DJ
In November 1999, Beverly bought some turntables. She wanted to use her huge record collection to become a DJ. She started playing music at local clubs in New York. As she got more DJ jobs, she slowly stopped going to modeling auditions.
Beverly became a popular DJ for many famous people. She played music for stars like Prince, Jay-Z, Sean "Puffy" Combs, and Alicia Keys. She also DJed for big events like the Glamour Fashion Awards and the VH1 Fashion Awards. In 2012, Beverly Bond was honored at an event called "Women Behind the Music." By 2013, she was still DJing in New York clubs. She also wrote for OneWorld magazine and Essence.
On July 9, 2020, Beverly Bond joined Senator Kamala Harris and other artists. They were part of a virtual event called "Get Up, Stand Up!" This event helped raise money for Joe Biden's 2020 presidential campaign.
Black Girls Rock! Organization and Awards
Beverly Bond is the founder of the amazing organization called Black Girls Rock! It started in 2006 with just a T-shirt design. But it quickly grew into a program that helps young women. It teaches them to believe in themselves and feel strong.
In 2006, Beverly also created the Black Girls Rock! Awards. The first show was held in Brooklyn, New York. In 2007, the popular award show moved to the famous Lincoln Center in Manhattan. A BET Network executive named Stephen Hill saw the show in 2007. He helped bring the award show to BET/Viacom in 2009.
In 2010, Beverly partnered with BET to show the awards on TV for the first time. Beverly Bond was the creator and main producer of the show. It celebrates the achievements of women of color in areas like acting, politics, and music. The show also features exciting performances. The first TV show had 2.7 million viewers! The awards won an NAACP Image Award in 2013 and 2014. The show now reaches 10 million viewers every year. In 2015, Beverly started a new part of the organization called Black Girls Rock! Africa.
At the 2016 awards show, Hillary Clinton thanked Beverly Bond. She thanked her for supporting Black women. In May 2016, Beverly Bond received a "Women Who Care" award in New York.
