History of Big Cabin
The town of Big Cabin got its name from a very large wooden cabin. This cabin was a famous landmark near where the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway built a switch in 1871 or 1872.
The first post office in this area, which was then called Indian Territory, opened in 1872. However, it wasn't officially named Big Cabin until 1892. In 1888, some business people built a stockyard in the town. A two-story building, made of wood, was built in 1892.
A school for children who were not Native American started in 1895. The railroad built a depot, which is like a train station, in 1903.
Big Cabin was officially planned as a town in 1904. It started the process to become an official town in 1926, but it didn't finish until 1958.
The area around Big Cabin became well-known for growing hay. One person who lived there claimed that between 1893 and 1910, Big Cabin shipped out more hay than any other town in the United States. Because of this, he called Big Cabin "the Hay Capital of the World."
