The Big East River is an important river in Ontario, Canada. It flows through the Muskoka and Nipissing areas. This river is part of the huge Great Lakes Basin. It starts in Algonquin Provincial Park and flows all the way to Huntsville. The Big East River is a "left tributary" of the Muskoka River. This means it flows into the Muskoka River from its left side.
The River's Journey
The Big East River starts its journey in a place called East End Lake. This lake is located inside Algonquin Provincial Park. The river then makes a big loop, heading east and south to Red Lake. After that, it turns southwest towards West Harry Lake.
From West Harry Lake, the river flows over the West Harry Lake Dam. It then rushes through an area known as the Big Cedar Chutes. Next, the river leaves Algonquin Provincial Park. It enters the Big East River Provincial Park. Here, it flows over the Finlayson Lake Dam and through the Finlayson Rapids.
The river then enters the Muskoka District. It continues its journey southwest through the McBrien Rapids. It reaches Distress Lake, where another stream, Tonawanda Creek, joins it. After Distress Lake, the river flows over Distress Dam and through McArthur Chute.
As the river leaves Big East River Provincial Park, it enters the town of Huntsville. Near a place called Williamsport, you can see the Dyer Memorial on the river's right bank. The river then forms many interesting bends and loops, called "oxbows." It passes Arrowhead Provincial Park on its right side. Another stream, the Little East River, joins it here. Finally, the Big East River flows under Ontario Highway 11. It reaches its end at Lake Vernon.
Where the Water Goes
The water from Lake Vernon doesn't stop there! It flows into the North Branch of the Muskoka River. From there, it travels into the Moon River. Then it goes into the Musquash River. All this water eventually reaches Lake Huron, one of the Great Lakes.
