Discover Big Moose Mountain

Big Moose Mountain is a significant peak in Maine, standing tall at 3,196 feet (about 974 meters) above sea level. It's a popular spot for outdoor activities and offers great views of the surrounding area.

Why Did the Name Change?

In the year 2000, the mountain's name was officially changed from Big Squaw Mountain. This happened because of a state law in Maine. The law said that all places with the word "squaw" or "squa" in their name needed to be renamed. This was done to make sure names are respectful to everyone.

Water Around the Mountain

Big Moose Mountain is part of a large watershed that feeds into the Kennebec River. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into a common river or lake. The Kennebec River eventually flows into the Gulf of Maine, which is part of the Atlantic Ocean.

  • The northeast side of Big Moose Mountain sends its water into Moosehead Lake. This lake is actually where the Kennebec River begins!
  • The southeast part of the mountain drains into a stream called Squaw Brook, which also flows into Moosehead Lake.
  • On the southwest side, water flows into Indian Brook. This brook then leads to Indian Pond and finally joins the Kennebec River.

Fun at Big Moose Mountain

Big Moose Mountain is home to the Big Squaw Mountain Resort. This resort is a popular place for alpine skiing, which means skiing down snowy slopes. During the winter, people visit to enjoy the thrill of skiing and snowboarding on the mountain's trails.
