Early Name: Brooksville
Long ago, Big Bend was known as Brooksville. This name honored Preston Brooks. He was a representative from South Carolina. At that time, Brooksville was the county seat. A county seat is the town where the local government offices are located.
Changing the County Seat
After the American Civil War, West Virginia became a separate state from Virginia. During this time, the county seat moved from Brooksville. A new county seat was chosen. It was named after a famous Union General, Ulysses S. Grant. This new county seat became known as Grantsville.
