Exploring Bilbarin's History

Bilbarin has an interesting past, especially concerning its name and early development.

How Bilbarin Got Its Name

The town was first officially created in 1914. Back then, it had a different name: Wogerlin. However, just two years later, in 1916, its name was changed to Bilbarin. The name Bilbarin comes from the Aboriginal language. It refers to a local water source, which was very important for people living in the area.

The Big Storm of 1928

In 1928, Bilbarin experienced a very powerful storm. This storm caused a lot of damage to the town. Many houses belonging to farmers were destroyed. The local hall, a community meeting place, was also blown over by the strong winds.

The Westralian Farmers' wheat shed, where wheat was stored, lost its roof. Even the railway station was damaged. The storm was so strong that it broke steel telephone poles. Many kilometers of telephone lines fell down, cutting off communication. A lot of rain, over 14 millimeters, fell in just a few minutes during this intense storm.

Grain and the Railway

The railway played a big role in Bilbarin's development, especially for farming.

New Grain Elevators in 1932

In 1932, the Wheat Pool of Western Australia made an important announcement for Bilbarin. They said that the town would get two new grain elevators. These elevators are tall structures used to store and load grain, like wheat. They were planned to be built right next to the railway siding. Each grain elevator would even have its own engine to help with the work. This was a big step for the local farming community.
