Bill Mathis (December 10, 1938 – October 20, 2020) was an American professional football player. He played as a running back for the New York Titans and later the New York Jets. These teams were part of the American Football League (AFL). Bill played college football for the Clemson Tigers. He spent his entire professional career with the New York team.

Bill Mathis: A Football Star
Bill Mathis started his pro career with the Titans in 1960. He was one of only four players from the original Titans team who stayed with the New York Jets. He helped them win a Super Bowl. In 1961, Bill led the AFL in how many times he carried the ball. Other players also chose him for the 1961 AFL All-League team.
All-Star Player
Bill was picked as an AFL Eastern Division All-Star twice. He earned this honor in both 1961 and 1963. During a game in 1961, Bill broke his collarbone. This was a serious injury. But he showed amazing toughness. He played in the very next game and all the games after that season.
A Super Bowl Champion
Bill's determination helped him keep his spot on the team year after year. His career ended in 1969 with a big win. He and his team won Super Bowl III. Bill was one of only twenty players who played in the AFL for its entire ten-year history. He was also one of just seven players who played their whole AFL career for one team.
Hall of Fame Honors
Bill Mathis was recognized for his great football career. He was inducted into several Halls of Fame. These include the Clemson University Hall of Fame. He also joined the South Carolina Hall of Fame. And he was honored in the Georgia Hall of Fame.
Life After Football
After he stopped playing football, Bill Mathis started a new career. He began working on Wall Street. This is a famous area in New York City known for finance. He started his work at a company called Cogan, Berlind, Weill & Levitt.
