Bill Whitaker was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He went to Hobart College and earned a degree in American history. Later, he studied at Boston University. There, he earned a master's degree in African-American studies. He also attended a special journalism program at the University of California, Berkeley in 1978.

Starting His Career

Bill Whitaker began his career in broadcast journalism in 1979. His first job was at a TV station called KQED in San Francisco. In 1982, he moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, to work for WBTV. He then covered politics in Atlanta from 1985 to 1989.
