Billawar is a town located in the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, which is a Union Territory in India. It is managed by a local government body called a notified area committee.
Billawar was founded a long time ago, in the 7th century A.D., by a ruler named Raja Bhog Pal. For a while, it was a kingdom, and its main city was Basohli until the 11th century.

Where is Billawar?
Billawar is found at coordinates 32.62°N and 75.62°E. It sits about 844 meters (2,769 feet) above sea level. The town is nestled among the Shivalik Mountains, between two small rivers called Naz and Bheeni. It's about 70 kilometers (43 miles) from Dayala Chak, which is on the main Delhi-Jammu highway (NH-1A).
Billawar is also the name of a larger administrative area, known as a tehsil. This tehsil is one of eight such areas in the Kathua district. It includes 46 different panchayat villages, which are local village councils.
A Look at Billawar's Past
The town of Billawar has a rich history. Raja Bhog Pal, who was the son of the king of Kullu Valley, established Billawar as his capital in 765 A.D. Before him, the area was ruled by a local chief named Rana Billo. Raja Bhog Pal took control and made Billawar his main city.
The royal family that ruled Billawar later became known as the Balouria family. This name came from "Balor," which was the old name for Billawar. The very old name for Billawar was "Bilawara."
People of Billawar
According to the 2011 census in India, Billawar had a population of 11,916 people. The town is divided into two main parts: the old Billawar town and the Phinter area.
More than half of the population (56%) are males, and 44% are females. Most people in Billawar can read and write, with an average literacy rate of 72%. This is higher than the national average for India at that time. About 78% of males and 58% of females are literate. Around 12% of the people living in Billawar are under six years old.
The main religions practiced in Billawar are Hinduism (88.2%) and Islam (9.7%).
Cool Places to Visit
Billawar is famous for its beautiful temples. One of the most well-known is the temple dedicated to Goddess Sukrala Devi. Many people believe she is a form of Goddess Sharada Devi from Kashmir.
The Sukrala Mata Mandir is a very popular spot in this area. Many devotees, or religious followers, visit this shrine, especially during the Navaratri festival.
