Exploring Richard Nixon's Childhood Home
The Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum is located in Yorba Linda. The Birthplace house is a bit hidden. It sits among trees, east of the main museum building.
What the House Looks Like
The house is a 1-1/2 story building. It is built in a style called Craftsman bungalow. This style was popular for homes in the early 1900s. The house has a sloped roof and wooden siding. A wide dormer window sticks out from the roof on the north side. A small roof covers the front door. Some windows have cool diamond-shaped glass panes.
How the Nixon Family Lived Here
Richard Nixon's father, Francis A. Nixon, built this house in 1912. He used a special mail-order kit to build it. Richard Nixon was born in this house the next year. The family lived here for about ten years. In 1922, they moved to Whittier.
Francis Nixon sold parts of their land in 1922 and 1925. The biggest part went to the Yorba Linda School District. They built a school on that land. The school district bought the rest of the land in 1948. They used the house for their employees to live in.
From Home to Museum
Richard Nixon started a group to create a library in 1968. This was after he won his first election as president. In 1988, the school district gave the property to this group. The old school building was taken down. Then, the museum was built on the land. This is how the birthplace became part of the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum.
