The Black River is a cool river located in Hastings County, which is in Central Ontario, Canada. It's part of a huge water system called the Great Lakes Basin. This means its water eventually flows into the Great Lakes. The Black River is a smaller stream that flows into the Moira River.
Where the Black River Flows
The Black River starts from a small, unnamed lake in a place called Cashel Township. This area is part of the town of Tudor and Cashel. The lake is about 2.2 kilometers (1.4 miles) northeast of a community named Gunter.
From there, the river flows mostly south and then southeast. It passes into Grimsthorpe Township, which is part of the town of Tweed. Here, it reaches a spot called Lingham Lake.
After leaving Lingham Lake, the river continues south into Elzevir Township. Along the way, another river called the West Black River joins it. This is known as a "tributary" – a smaller stream that flows into a larger one.
The Black River then briefly turns west into the town of Madoc. But it quickly turns back east into Elzevir Township, close to the community of Queensborough.
Near Queensborough, the river flows over a special barrier called a weir. It then continues south through some fast-moving water, known as rapids. Finally, it goes under Ontario Highway 7 before reaching its end point, where it joins the Moira River. The Moira River then flows into the Bay of Quinte on Lake Ontario.
Fun on the Black River
The Black River is a popular spot for people who love to paddle! It's especially great for whitewater paddling, which means paddling through rapids. Many paddlers visit in the spring during an event called M.A.C.K.fest. This stands for the Marmora Area Canoe and Kayak Festival.
The community of Queensborough is a friendly place where paddlers can easily get into the river. Whitewater Ontario, a group for paddlers, recognizes this spot as a good access point.
