The Black Sturgeon River is a river located in the Kenora District of northwestern Ontario, Canada. It's part of a huge system of rivers called the Nelson River drainage basin, which means its waters eventually flow all the way to Hudson Bay! This river is a branch, or tributary, of the Winnipeg River.
Where Does the River Flow?
The Black Sturgeon River starts its journey at a place called Silver Lake. It flows out of the west side of the lake at Crystal Bay.
From there, it travels west into the Northeast Bay of Black Sturgeon Lakes. It then moves through a narrow passage known as the Grassy Narrows to reach the main part of the lake. Along the way, a smaller river called the Little Black Sturgeon River joins it from the left side.
The river then heads towards the city of Kenora. It passes through a narrow spot near the communities of Lajeunesse Bridge and Pelletier Bridge. After this, it turns north through another arm of Black Sturgeon Lakes.
At the northern end of the lake, the river is crossed by Ontario Highway 658. This is where it leaves the city of Kenora. Finally, the Black Sturgeon River tumbles over some rapids, called Black Sturgeon Rapids, before reaching its end at the Winnipeg River.
