Blackrock, also known as Black Rock, is a small, unincorporated community. It is located in Yakima County, Washington, in the United States. This community is found about twelve miles north of Sunnyside. An "unincorporated community" means it is a place where people live. However, it does not have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, the county government manages it.
How Blackrock Got Its Name
The community of Blackrock was started near a stream called Blackrock Creek. This creek is located east of Moxee. The area was named after a very large, dark-colored rock nearby. This rock was a noticeable landmark in the area.
In 1906, a man named Abraham Vanderlinde helped establish the community. He opened both a post office and a store there. Mr. Vanderlinde also became the first postmaster for Blackrock. This meant he was in charge of the mail services for the community.
