History of Moxee
Moxee was first settled in 1867 by Mortimer Thorp and some French-Canadian farmers. There was a special warm spring on Thorp's ranch that steamed all year and never froze. Native people called this spring "Moxee," which means an edible root in the Sahaptin language. The settlement adopted this name.
Over the years, Moxee has been known by different names. These include "Artesian," "Moksee," "Moxie," and "Moxee City."
Farming and French Heritage
The soil in the Moxee area is sandy, and the climate is mild. This made it perfect for growing hops, which are used to make beer. It was also good for growing grapes.
Around 1900, the Northern Pacific Railroad built a railway line nearby. New irrigation systems were also created. This made the farmland even richer and attracted more settlers. Many of these new settlers were French and French-Canadian farmers. They had first moved to places like northern Minnesota and northern Michigan.
Because of these new settlers, French culture became very important in Moxee. A French school was started on La Framboise Road. Church services at Holy Rosary Parish were even held in French until World War I.
Moxee Becomes a City
The town of Moxee City officially became a city on April 27, 1921. You can still see Moxee's French-Canadian history in the street names today. Some examples are Charron, Faucher, Rivard, and Beaudry.
Even though it has a strong French past, nearly one-third of Moxee's residents today are of Hispanic descent.
