Blythewood is a town in South Carolina, United States. It is located in Richland and Fairfield counties. Blythewood is a suburb of Columbia, South Carolina, which is the state capital.
In 2020, about 4,772 people lived in Blythewood. The town is part of the larger Columbia, South Carolina, Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is about 15 miles (24 kilometers) from downtown Columbia. Major roads like Blythewood Road and U.S. Route 21 pass through the town. They connect to Interstate 77, making it easy to travel to and from Blythewood.

History of Blythewood
Blythewood was first known by a different name: "Doko". This was a Native American word meaning "a watering place". The town got its name from Doko Depot, a stop on the railroad between Charlotte and Columbia.
In 1865, during the American Civil War, General Sherman's army destroyed this railroad. The town was later rebuilt. In 1877, its name was changed to Blythewood. This new name came from a local school called The Blythewood Female Institute. The school was later renamed "Blythewood Academy".
The George P. Hoffman House is the oldest house still standing in Blythewood. It was built in 1855 and is now used as the city hall. This historic building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
Geography and Climate
Blythewood is located in the Piedmont region of South Carolina. This area is known for its rolling hills and varied landscape.
The town covers a total area of about 25.3 square kilometers (9.8 square miles). Most of this area, about 25.1 square kilometers (9.7 square miles), is land. A small part, about 0.2 square kilometers (0.08 square miles), is water.

Economy and Jobs
